On June 24, 2011, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo signed into
law the New York Marriage Equality Act. The act made New
York the sixth and the largest state in the US to recognize
same-sex marriages.
The Law
amends New York's Domestic Relations Law in the following
ways:
Applications for a marriage license shall be granted
regardless of whether the parties are of the same or a
different sex.
A marriage that is otherwise valid shall be valid regardless
of whether the parties to the marriage are of the same or a
different sex.
No government treatment or legal status, effect, right,
benefit, privilege, protection or responsibility relating to
marriage shall differ based on the parties to the marriage
being of the same sex or a different sex.
Having presided over a copious amount of same-sex
wedding ceremonies in New York over the years, NY
Marriages has had the pleasure seeing firsthand that
ineffable look on a person's face when
I pronounce them as married for life
when the marriage itself may not have been a distinct
possibility when their lives as a couple began.
As a same-sex New York
Wedding officiant,
I have seen firsthand the significance in legitimizing a
relationship in a legal capacity that has been long since
validated within people's hearts and it is but another
facet of this amazing thing we all call love.
